Curious about something? We're here to help! Here are the top questions we often receive from our community.
Idaho law allows tattoos starting at 14 with parental consent. At MJ Artistry, we only tattoo clients 17 and older. If you’re 17, you must have a legal guardian present during your appointment and both of you must bring valid photo ID.
We’re typically booked about 4–6 weeks in advance. However, we occasionally have last-minute cancellations, so feel free to ask about sooner availability.
Typically no — all communication is done through messaging. Once you book and send inspo photos, we create and send your design ahead of time for approval. All edits must be finalized before your appointment.
Yes! Designs are created once your appointment is officially booked. You’ll receive a digital draft the day before your appointment so we can make sure it’s perfect. Major edits must be done before your session — there’s no time for big changes the day of.
Possibly! Fine line work doesn’t always work well for cover-ups, but feel free to send us a clear, well-lit photo of the tattoo you’d like covered and we’ll let you know if it’s doable.
Yes, depending on size and complexity. We love doing multiple small tattoos in one session — just send all designs upfront so we can recommend the right appointment type and quote.
Yes! Flash sheets are available at events and priced at special flash rates there only. You’re welcome to book a flash design outside an event, but it will be priced as a custom tattoo. We’re happy to make slight edits for a personal touch.
We specialize in black and gray fine line work, but we do offer minimal color tattoos. Please check with us in advance to confirm that your idea fits our style and that we have the color available.
Bring a valid photo ID, water, and a small snack (especially for longer sessions). Wear comfortable clothes that give easy access to the tattoo area. You’re welcome to bring 1–2 supportive guests who are respectful and not disruptive. Feel free to bring anything that helps you stay comfortable, like an audiobook or stress ball.
Yes, we recommend Mad Rabbit Numbing Cream. Clean and shave the area (if needed), apply a thick layer, wrap it in plastic wrap, and let it sit for 45–60 minutes before your appointment.
Eat a high-protein meal, drink lots of water, avoid alcohol for 24 hours, gently shave the area the night before if needed, and get good sleep.
Leave the Saniderm wrap on for 3 days, then remove it gently using warm water. Wash the area twice daily with unscented soap and apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion or healing balm. Avoid soaking in water, tanning, or heavy sweating for 2 weeks, and wear loose clothes while sleeping on clean sheets.
They may, especially in high-friction areas like fingers, wrists, or ribs. Finger tattoos often need 1–3 touch-ups about a month apart. Once healed, you should be fine for several years, depending on your skin, daily use, and sun exposure.
Please give at least 48 hours’ notice to avoid losing your deposit or paying a rescheduling fee. Life happens — just communicate with us as soon as possible.
No, all tattoos are by appointment only. At events, we do walk-in only.
Tips are never expected but always appreciated if you love your tattoo and had a great experience.
Sometimes! It depends on the age, texture, and severity of the scarring. Send us a clear, close-up photo so we can see if it’s a good fit for fine line work.
Tattoos aren’t safe for pregnant women. If you’re breastfeeding, please talk to your doctor first. We do accept breastfeeding clients with doctor approval.
Yes! Bring one or two supportive guests. If they’re distracting or negative, we’ll ask them to step out so you can enjoy your appointment.
Piercing with a hollow needle causes a lot less trauma because it actually moves the tissue aside to allow room for the jewelry to go in, whereas when being pierced with a gun, the gun forces the earring through your ear to pierce it. A piercing gun also uses a butterfly back that leaves no room for swelling. With hollow needles we use flat back earrings customized to the size of your ear.
It's not recommended to get any piercings while pregnant because if you were to get any infections, it could get in your bloodstream and then to your baby. Getting a piercing while breastfeeding is totally fine though!
Yes we do!
We’ll give you a detailed card with all the instructions. Clean 1–2x a day with a Q-tip using hypochlorous acid (available at the salon) or sterile saline wound wash from any pharmacy. Schedule a post changeout depending on the piercing: cartilage should be changed out 4–8 weeks after, lobes 8–12 weeks. Avoid touching/twisting. No lakes, hot tubs, or pools for 30 days. Healing time: cartilage needs 6+ months to fully heal, lobes take about 12 weeks.
No — hoops can cause more trauma because they’re easier to bump or tug. They’re also more exposed and can get infected easier. After your piercing is fully healed you can change to a hoop — we’d be happy to help!
We offer piercings on lobes, mid/upper/forward helix, tragus, conch, flat, and nostril!
For cartilage, wait at least 6 months. For lobes, wait at least 12 weeks.
The post you’re pierced with is slightly longer to allow for swelling. Once healed, changing to a shorter post avoids angle changes, bumps, irritation, or prolonged healing.
No — we sterilize every piece of jewelry we pierce with, and we can’t guarantee we could sterilize your own jewelry safely. Plus, your jewelry may not be compatible. We have plenty of beautiful options to choose from!
We pierce with 100% medical-grade implant titanium jewelry! We can also pierce with 14k gold if requested.
Yes! We have standard jewelry included, plus a range of upgraded options.
Clean with hypochlorous acid (buy at the salon) or sterile saline wound wash from any pharmacy. Don’t use alcohol, peroxide, or Claire’s solution — too harsh for fresh piercings!
We recommend a max of 4 at once — that’s plenty for your ears to handle. You can always come back for more! For cartilage piercings and if you’re a side sleeper, we suggest one ear at a time unless you sleep on your back.
Hypochlorous acid is produced naturally by white blood cells when tissue is damaged or infected. It’s a great antibacterial, kills 99.9% of bacteria/viruses/fungi, and supports good bacteria for healing. Also helps clot blood. Perfect for piercing aftercare! You can get it at our salon for $10.
If it’s actively bleeding, use a Q-tip to stop it and spray hypochlorous acid on the area — it helps clot the blood!
Microblading uses a small blade to create hair-like strokes over the full brow — best if you have enough natural hair for it to blend. Powder brows (ombre) use a tattoo machine and needles for a soft, pixelated, filled-in makeup look. Combo brows combine both techniques for a custom brow — our most popular! If you’re unsure, book a free consultation and we’ll help you decide.
Not all permanent makeup is recommended while pregnant or breastfeeding. Extra hormones can affect your results.
Most clients feel minimal discomfort — similar to tweezing. We’ve perfected our numbing technique: 20 minutes of numbing cream before we start, plus a secondary numbing liquid during the appointment to keep you comfortable.
Avoid all blood thinners — caffeine and alcohol included — for 48 hours beforehand. If you want to tint your brows, tell your artist first. No microneedling, chemical peels, retinol for 2 weeks before. No Botox for 2 weeks before. Avoid tanning — brows cannot be sunburned.
PMU brows typically heal in 7–10 days. We’ll give you detailed aftercare instructions and a kit. Clean brows twice daily with the included cleanser using cold to lukewarm water — no hot water. Apply the ointment 3x daily (a little goes a long way). Avoid sweating, steam, saunas, swimming, sun, and do not itch or pick. They’ll look darker at first, then lighten. Sometimes they fade then reappear within a few weeks.
Tips are never expected but always appreciated if you love your new brows!
Let them grow! We love working with your natural hair.
We recommend a 6–8 week touch-up — your “perfecting session”. Book this within 12 weeks of your first appointment or it’ll be a yearly touch-up at full price. After that, you’ll only need touch-ups every 1–3 years. Not sure? Schedule a free in-person consult or send a photo with no makeup in good lighting.
First appointments are about 3 hours to give plenty of time — we usually finish early but don’t book anything urgent right after. Touch-ups are about 1.5 hours.
Yes! Tell us beforehand and send clear photos with no makeup in good light. If your old brows are faded enough, you can book as a first-time client. If they’re not faded, you may need saline removal first. All transfer clients must book a new first appointment before we’ll do yearly touch-ups.
Microchanneling is a noninvasive procedure designed to stimulate your body’s own natural ability to generate collagen, elastin, and other building blocks of healthy skin. By stimulating the outermost layers, it helps your body start this process without penetrating into living tissue.
Microchanneling is a linear stamping method that creates evenly spaced channels without skin tearing or dragging, which reduces discomfort. The treatment is faster because the tips cover more surface area, and downtime is minimal. We also use a serum with human growth factors for quicker results. Microneedling uses a rolling method that can create irregular channels, more skin trauma, and longer downtime (5–7 days).
You can get microchanneling every 4–6 weeks!
Results can often be seen after one treatment, but best results happen with about 4 treatments. For more severe skin concerns, it might take closer to 6 sessions.
There’s minimal downtime! Avoid direct sunlight for 24 hours, but after that there are no restrictions.
There’s minimal discomfort — many clients don’t need numbing cream. Most report just a “tight” feeling afterward, and we have strategies to minimize discomfort during treatment.
We can add numbing if you’d like, but most people don’t need it — microchanneling is very tolerable!
Procell’s serum contains bone marrow-derived growth factors in a hyaluronic acid suspension. Both are naturally found in your body. No cells, DNA, blood, or foreign substances — it’s been used safely for over 10 years.
Don’t apply anything to your skin for 90 minutes unless provided by your provider. Avoid touching with hands, phones, or other objects during that time. Avoid direct sun for 24 hours, but you can start applying SPF after 90 minutes. You’ll get a detailed aftercare card and your provider will explain everything!
Microchanneling can help improve fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, stretch marks, and rosacea.
It’s not recommended while pregnant or breastfeeding. Once you’re no longer pregnant or done nursing, we’d love to help you start your microchanneling journey!
BioRePeel is a non-invasive chemical peel that uses a blend of acids, enzymes, and other ingredients to exfoliate and rejuvenate your skin. It’s gentler than traditional chemical peels and safe for all skin types!
BioRePeel can be done every 7–10 days.
You might see small results after a couple treatments, but you’ll get the best results with a series of 4–6 treatments. That’s why we recommend our package deal for this service!
Yes! One of the best parts about BioRePeel is that it’s safe to do year-round.
Unlike traditional chemical peels, there’s no social downtime with BioRePeel. You may have minor flaking, but you won’t have the major peeling you’d see with other peels.
BioRePeel has no downtime and it’s safe all year long — unlike harsher peels that can cause heavy peeling and are best done only in certain seasons.
It’s safe to be out in the sun after BioRePeel, but we always recommend using and reapplying SPF and protecting your skin!
After BioRePeel, stop using active skincare ingredients (retinols, AHAs/BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, etc.) for 7 days. No exfoliants for 7 days. Avoid wearing makeup for 24–72 hours, no gym or heavy sweating for 24 hours, no swimming or saunas for 7 days. Your provider will give you an aftercare card and go over everything with you!
Discontinue any actives in your skincare routine (retinols, AHAs/BHAs, benzoyl peroxide) for 7 days before your treatment.
BioRePeel helps with acne scarring (PIH), texture, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines/wrinkles.
It’s not recommended if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Once you’re done, we’d love to help you with treatments!
